Aims of CIBS

Conway Institute Bioinformatics Supoprt (CIBS) aims to provide assistance to Conway researchers in a wide variety of Bioinformatics Analyses. Delivery of support is through this web site and hands-on assistance from the CIBS staff. We will also provide courses in bioinformatics data analysis. Please watch this site and the Conway web site for announcements of upcoming courses.

Access to Facilities

You can access most of the site immediately. To register as a user please contact CIBS (see support link) for a username and password. As a registered user you can access the web interface to EMBOSS which provides approximately 200 programs for the analysis of nucleotide and protein sequences. Furthermore, you will have a home directory on the server and can login to the command line interface via SSH. If you are unfamiliar with SSH you can find out more at OpenSSH or see below for platform-specific pointers:

Linux

You probably already have an SSH client installed. Otherwise get the client rpm for your distribution, install it as root and connect to actin.ucd.ie. For more information see this search. Remember, you do NOT need to install and configure an SSH server if you only want to connect to remote machines.

Windows

Several SSH client applications exist for Windows. Try this search for a list of relevant URL's. When you have installed the software connect to actin.ucd.ie. You may want a SFTP client to upload and download files in which case you could try using WinSCP.

MacOSX

You probably already have an SSH client installed. Otherwise get the client package for your distribution, install it as root and connect to actin.ucd.ie. For more information see this search. Remember, you do NOT need to install and configure an SSH server if you only want to connect to remote machines.
